Twice voted Sea Kayaker Magazine's Readers' Choice Award for Best Weekend Touring Kayak, the Tempest 170 has earned its reputation through performance that holds up across skill levels, conditions, and kilometres.

The larger of the two Tempest models, the 170 is built for medium to larger paddlers who want a true sea kayak that performs equally well on a weekend coastal trip, a Great Lakes crossing, or a guided skills clinic. The moderately rockered hull with uniquely chined sides and a shallow V bottom tracks confidently with the skeg up, responds predictably to edging and leaned turns, and drops cleanly downwind when the skeg is fully deployed. Initial and secondary stability are both rated high, and the hull's long waterline and nicely flared bow resurface quickly and shed waves in big water conditions. The low deck profile reduces windage on exposed water, a detail that matters on full-day paddles in variable Canadian weather.

The Phase 3 AirPro XP outfitting is the most adjustable seat system in the industry, with five easy-adjust straps for the backband, removable and repositionable hip pads and thigh supports, an adjustable seat pan, and SlideLock foot braces you can tune on the water. Three VCP-style hatch covers with foam bulkheads provide expedition-quality dry storage, and the TruTrak skeg system keeps the hull honest in crosswinds. This is Frontenac Outfitters' most requested kayak for courses and clinics, and it's available by pre-order. Contact us at 613-376-6220 or info@frontenacoutfitters.com for details.
